Is Texas Actually Cheaper Than California?
In the thirty-four years since 1990, thousands of companies have left California for more affordable cities in other states. The magnitude of these departures has been well documented in the media, with major news outlets referring to it as a “corporate exodus.” Some CEOs have cited strict local regulations and cost of living increases as the cause of the migration, but additional factors have played into it. Notably, more than half of these companies headed to the same three cities: Austin, Phoenix, and—most often—Las Vegas. What was it that made these cities appear more ideal than California? And do they actually live up to all the hype?

A Note From Executive Director Connie Stopher
I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of our members. All that we do is made possible through your generous support. That comes in the form of membership dues, time dedicated to attending meetings, assisting on projects, advocating for the EDC, and supporting the region in so many ways.

July marks the beginning of our fiscal year, which means we are sending out invoices for annual membership. Those have all gone out, and I want to say a big THANK YOU for your continued support. If your membership has proven valuable to you and you'd like to increase your level, add a sponsorship, or get involved in another way, please let me know.

There are several opportunities that we're keeping our eye on, including increasing our foreign direct investment work, upping our presence at trade shows, and adding in new data tools that will become possible as we continue to grow the organization. This next year is already looking promising! Here's to another record-setting year!

EDC Board Retreat

The EDC Board Retreat will be held on August 27th. If you are a member of the board, you should have received a save the date calendar invitation. Connie will be reaching out with additional details on the agenda. Last year was our first board retreat, and it helped us set priorities for the coming year and gave our newly-elected board members the opportunity to network and collaborate across the region.

Sponsorship Opportunities
Just a reminder that an annual sponsorship allows you to provide one sponsorship but support and be recognized at every single event through the year. These sponsorships allow us to elevate our presence at all our events from trade shows to our FAM tour, the trade mission to Taiwan, and everything in between. Take a look at some of our upcoming Fall 2024 events, and if you're interested in learning more about sponsorships or would like to be one of our 24-25 sponsors, please reach out to Connie at [email protected].

Thank you to VFW Post 1956 and Southwest Healthcare for being our first 2024 Sponsors!
August Board Meeting
We'd like to thank the City of Menifee for hosting our next meeting on August 1st at Menifee City Hall. Our speaker will be Sammy Totah from Kaiser Permanente. We hope that you'll join us. If you'd like to bring a guest, please contact Deana at [email protected].
